Dana White is Pissed GSP is Vacating the UFC Middleweight Title

Dana White seems to have a ever ending, on-again off-again relationship with UFC superstar George St-Pierre. After GSP destroyed Michael Bisping, many in the MMA community and UFC brass expected a new era for the Canadian fighter. Perhaps GSP could even become Dana’s new Conor McGregor. That means giving the UFC some much needed star power and selling out arenas, while hitting 1 million plus PPV buys.

Now there’s the unexpected news that GSP has decided he will vacate the UFC middleweight belt. When asked about it, White sarcastically stated, “I thought I’d be super pi**ed, but I’m really not. I expected it.” White made the statement after the UFC event in Fresno. White went on to say he knew George would come up with some problem and not fight Whittaker.

This is a frustrating turn of events not only for White but the entire UFC. With major superstarts like Jon Jones, Brock Lesnar and Conor on the sidelines, the promotion needed a boost with a proven PPV draw and GSP stepped up to the plate. Now, just as fast as he came on the scene, Pierre is taking a step back.

It seems GSP has a legitimate reason to vacate the title. Just a little more than a week ago, he announced he has ulcerative colitis, that was diagnosed just days after his victory over Michael Bisping. St-Pierre believes he got the serious condition as a result of moving up in weight. He went on to state his body was starting to fail him before the Bisping fight, which makes the victory all the more impressive.

Dana White, for whatever reason, isn’t being too sympathetic to GSP. He expected a middleweight mega-fight with Whittaker and now it appears that won’t take place in the near future or perhaps ever. For now, Whittaker will hold the title as UFC middleweight champion. As for the next big bout in the middleweight division, it looks like it’s going to be Whittaker vs. Luke Rockhold, February 10th in Perth Australia.

Who knows what the future holds for GSP at this point. If he recovers from his health issues, will he stay at middleweight or move down? There is one fight that the entire world wants to see though. That’s a mega-fight between Conor McGregor and Pierre. That would surely put a smile on Dana White’s face and sell PPV buys in the millions. For now, all we can do it wait and hope.
