Herb Dean was the ref for the much anticipated rematch between Stipe Miocic and the Brazilian Jr. Dos Santos, at UFC 211 in Dallas Texas. It’s been a couple years since Miocic lost a tough decision loss to Dos Santos and revenge was clearly on his mind. The heavyweight champ Stipe wasted no time once the bell rang and opened up with a nice leg kick. Miocic pushed forward in the fight and was clearly the aggressor. Dos Santos responded with a few leg kicks, but Stipe was unfazed.
The American UFC champion got Santos to back up towards the fence, then he unloaded. Several hard punches connected to the body and head of Jr. Then, Dos Santos moved to his right to escape Miocic and got pulverized with a thundering right hand. Dos Santos took the full power punch and fell to his knees. Miocic jumped all over the hurt Brazilian and wasted no time pouring on an onslaught of punches. Stipe looked up, after Jr didn’t respond to the pounding and glared at referee Herb Dean. Herb finally jumped in and called a stop to the fight. Stipe Miocic retains his UFC Heavyweight title in glorious fashion.
Now the future is uncertain for Dos Santos. Just a few years ago he was almost considered unbeatable. He quickly dispatched Cain Velasquez in the first round and then it was downhill from there. Dos Santos then went on to lose two times to Cain and then got injured. He barely beat Miocic in their first meeting. It seems the wear and tear of fighting for years has taken its toll on Jr. Has Dos Santos lost a step? Will he be able to recover and make a run at the UFC title again? It will be difficult to say. The UFC heavyweight division is super stacked. From Cain to Alistair Overeem, it is one of the most talented divisions by far. Dos Santos is a hero in Brazil and has made so many fans around the world. Perhaps he can get his old dominating form back one more time and win a few fights before he hangs up the gloves.
